Some species of Gaultheria is primarily used for oil production, and sharing the same qualities and properties of Wintergreen.

The plant has many uses from treating respiratory conditions, predominantly as a joint and muscular relief and the dried leaf and stem aids in the relief of rheumatoid arthritis.

This essential oil is similar to that of Sweet Birch oil, as both are made up of mainly methyl salicylate. This is a stimulating and refreshing odour that has an intense sweet-woody, almost fruity aroma and is an ingredient in many liniments and sports rubs.

Not suitable for internal and external use.

Can blend a few drops into a massage oil base.

Other uses include minor pharmaceutical uses, some perfumery in the ‘forest-type’ fragrances and extensively in the flavouring industry i.e. softdrinks, toothpaste, chewing gum and mints.
